Dear Depression:
When you made that brutal first visit, I was sure you were going to stay with me forever. Your grip, your lies, and the brutal ache you imposed had me convinced I would never escape your oppressive presence.
You’re really good at convincing people that they’ll feel that pit in their stomach forever. That they’re doomed, worthless, and no good.
I know this from personal experience, but also because month after month, clients came to me in a state of despair. Some sought therapy not long after you arrived, but others waited until they couldn’t eat, sleep, or function properly.
You turned them into a shell of their former selves.
Based on my own experience, clinical training, and years of experience, I was able to put a name to you.
And once I put a name to you, I could pull out the appropriate tools to help my clients.
Thankfully, the majority of my clients had the same type of depression I had as a child.
And now I see you clearly for what you are.
